The building envelope determines the visual appearance, comfort, economic efficiency and hence the quality of a building to a significant extent. Increasingly extensive and complex laws, standards and directives, such as the Energy Saving Ordinance, Energy Efficiency Directive, European standards and technical developments have made the specialist engineer work related to the building envelope an indispensable service. Facade engineering has become a specialist discipline which encompasses elements of mechanical engineering, lightweight construction technology, metal construction, glass technology and building equipment technology using the most varied types of materials which meet with the most demanding construction physical and technical requirements, and will develop even further in future (for instance, mechatronics and integration of alternative energy conversion/recovery systems). The integration of the diverse functions of a building envelope requires a high degree of technical creativity in order to develop economically efficient and functioning solutions. One result must be the avoidance of misinvestment and the limitation of consequential costs. This is, amongst other things, applicable to new construction types and in relation to conventional forms of construction with completely changed manufacturing and installation processes. The building envelope and, in particular, the facade, must be capable of being adapted to the most varied demands, it must be compatible with the environment and climate and it must have a sustainable design.
